The eleventh station: Jesus being nailed to the cross

I found myself struggling with both yesterday’s and today’s stations. I think the problem is trying to write for devotional reflection, yet from the perspective of some of those crucifying Jesus. Today’s is from one of the “chief priests” who according to Matthew’s and Mark’s version of the story, were among those who shouted mockery and insults, including a version of the direct speech in this sonnet. (Luke talks about generic leaders, and John loses this aspect entirely.) And I plead guilty to harmonising that part of Matthew and Mark with the uniquely Lukan plea for forgiveness, using poetic licence as my “get out of gaol free” card.

XI. Jesus is nailed to the cross (the priest’s story)

It was so hard to pin this rabbi down;
he wriggled away from all our questions,
took from scribe and teacher their doctors’ gowns –
presumed instead to give them instruction.

Well, now he is fixed where he can’t escape.
“If you are Son of God, show your power,
come down from this cross.” No, he’s in no shape
to evade, deserted by his shower

of supporters and left alone to die.
Such presumption cannot go unpunished.
That he be God’s Man! It must be a lie:
the house of God can’t be so diminished.

But as I hear him whispering “Forgive”,
though he be dead, I fear his word will live.
